Not just a religion, actually, but an insidious religion -- an ideology that has permeated every aspect of our life. In case you missed my original column, you can find it
here.
Earth Day has come and gone. It fell on a Sunday this year, which I render to God, not to Mother Gaia. I'm sure the greens had a blast though, doing whatever it is they do on Earth Day. I was browsing
Wikipedia's Earth Day page and came across some rather distressing links.
The first one contains a depressingly robotic chant to be repeated by the believer ad nauseam:

Mmm, that's good indoctrination.
And then there's
this priceless site, which lists 77 Theses On the Care of the Earth. Aside from evoking the image of Luther and his 95 theses, the list culminates with this gem:
77. THEREFORE, LET US PLEDGE OUR LIVES AND FORTUNES TO AID THE GREAT
TASK OF EARTH'S REJUVENATION, AND WITH CONFIDENCE AND FAITH, EACH DO OUR PART AS
A TRUSTEE OF EARTH TO TAKE CHARGE AND TAKE CARE OF OUR PLANET.
This statement may not seem extreme, but generally, one's life and fortune is generally dedicated to one's deity (e.g. though often I fail, I attempt to dedicate my life and fortune to the work of the God). If environmentalism is your religion and Mother Gaia is your deity (and this is undoubtedly the case for some people), then I won't judge. Unless, of course, you misrepresent your religion as a secular pursuit that will benefit all people. Then I say, stop your damned lying.
***On a related note, Earth Day is celebrated on the same day as Lenin's birthday. Given that both environmentalists and Lenin hate(d) private property and advocated its destruction, I'd say this is refreshingly coincidental (or intended, perhaps?).
